Just as Gregor Samsa, Kafka's anti-hero, awoke from uneasy dreams to find that he had been transformed into a giant insect and was trapped by his shell, musicians often feel trapped by the weight of training, tradition and the rules of the musical marketplace. One percussionist offers his reflections on becoming an "escape artist," that is using a rigorous training in contemporary music as a springboard for exploration.
