Marc Rochester, presenter
Invented over 2200 years ago, the organ claims to be oldest mechanical musical instrument. Today marks the 332nd anniversary of the birth of the composer most closely associated with it, Johann Sebastian Bach. To celebrate the occasion and to introduce the Conservatory’s first pipe organ, Marc Rochester investigates the instrument’s history, use and repertory in an attempt to answer the question; is the organ a legitimate musical instrument or simply a sound-making machine.
At the age of 24 Marc Rochester became the youngest cathedral organist in the UK. He also served as city organist in Londonderry, Ireland, and from 1998 to 2011 was Resident Organist at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in Kuala Lumpur. He has given solo recitals, concerto performances and ensemble performances around the globe, and made numerous broadcasts and recordings as an organist.
