Khoo Hui Ling, presenter
There are myriad examples across various cultures, of music inspired by paintings and poetry. This fascinating interaction between music and different art forms is the focal point in the presentation, “A Confluence of Artistic Realms: A Multimedia Performance of Tan Dun’s 8 Memories in Watercolor.” In this presentation, Tan Dun’s 8 Memories in Watercolor is interpreted via an approach that draws musical parallels with traditional Chinese painting and music. The synergy of different fields of art has an enriching impact on the communication between composer, performer, and audience. It culminated in the production of short documentaries that accompany specific movements of the work. This multimedia performance will be featured at the end of the presentation.
Pianist Khoo Hui Ling is continuously inspired and humbled by how music draws people into a common experience. Sought after as both a performer and teacher, she enjoys sharing this experience in her musical endeavours. Khoo graduated with a Doctorate in Piano Performance from the University of Oregon under the tutelage of Dean Kramer. She previously attended the Peabody and Yong Siew Toh Conservatories of Music, and studied with Brian Ganz, Thomas Hecht, and Julie Tan.
