This was particularly true for the tuba\, which as a solo instrument had no significant solo repertoire composed for it before 1950. Tubists such as Roger Bobo from the USA\, John Fletcher from the UK\, and Michel Lind from Sweden\, demonstrated the virtuosity possible on the solo tuba\, while two of Øystein Baassvik’s primary mentors—Arnold Jacobs and Harvey Phillips—became revolutionary promoters of the instrument in the areas of pedagogy\, and in dramatically expanding the solo repertoire for the instrument\, respectively. \nAs the first fully dedicated tuba soloist in music history\, Øystein has been a primary torch bearer for continuing these tubistiPreview (opens in a new tab)c evolutions and revolutions. \nCome join the YST Wind\, Brass and Percussion areas in exploring an evening of brass artistry featuring one of the brass world’s living legends\, Øystein Baadsvik! \nABOUT THE ARTISTØystein Baadsvik is the only tuba virtuoso to have carved out a career exclusively as a soloist\, rather than becoming a member of an orchestra or accepting a teaching post. His multi-faceted musical career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, lecturer and recording artist has taken him all over the world. The unique virtuosity and musicality Baadsvik brings to the tuba has established him as the exemplar of the instrument. Baadsvik studied under the celebrated tuba player Harvey Phillips\, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Department of Music at Indiana University and with the legendary Arnold Jacobs\, Principal Tuba with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Øystein Baadsvik’s international career began in 1991 when he was awarded two prizes at the prestigious Concours International d’Exécution Musicale in Geneva. He works constantly to expand musical horizons of the tuba and has premiered some forty solo works by composers from the USA\, Russia\, Sweden\, Norway and Switzerland. In this ongoing process\, he has developed new tuba-playing techniques that have been used in a number of more recent works for the instrument. \nRegister HerePresent your ticket/confirmation at Bar Bar Black Sheep (Kent Ridge) to enjoy 20% off food\, and beer/wine/cocktails & more at $4.90 nett each! *Valid only on date of ticket \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Free admission via Eventbrite registration. • All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.
