BACH Brandenburg Concerto No. 3\, BWV1048 \nI. [no tempo indication] II. AdagioIII. Allegro \nCantata\, “Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe”\, BWV22 \n– Intermission – \nVIVALDI Gloria\, RV589 \nABOUT THE EVENT Ong Teng Cheong Professor in Music\, Masaaki Suzuki returns to lead YST musicians in a special performance as part of the ongoing Bach Cantata Series. Having spent 18 years recording the complete church cantatas of J.S. Bach\, Suzuki continues to bring to international audiences new insights into the music of Bach and his contemporaries. Starting the programme is a familiar instrumental work from Bach’s vastly popular oeuvre\, the uplifting 3rd Brandenburg Concerto. This is followed by the church cantata\, Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe (Jesus gathered the twelve to Himself)\, which Bach composed for his (successful) audition to the position of Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Completing the programme is Antonio Vivaldi’s eternally popular and jubilant Gloria\, which will feature the full force of YST’s Voice Studio in musical transcendence. \nAll proceeds from this concert will go towards the Choral Singing for the Prevention of Dementia study at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. \nProgramme Notes \nABOUT THE CHORAL SINGING FOR THE PREVENTION OF DEMENTIA STUDY \nCognitive function declines with increasing age. This universal phenomenon affects the majority of our senior citizens. With rapidly-ageing populations\, effective interventions are critical for maintaining good cognitive function and preventing cognitive decline. This study seeks to examine choral singing’s efficacy and underlying mechanisms in delaying cognitive decline. On a weekly basis\, senior citizens attend choir training and rehearsals\, and their cognitive function is tracked in comparison with counterparts who instead attend general health education programmes. \nPreliminary analysis of the results has shown that choral singing improves cognitive health in ageing individuals\, and we see on a weekly basis how the elderly enjoy the opportunity to engage musically and socially in their choral sessions. \nYour support (through ticket proceeds and any donations made to the study) enables the weekly choral sessions and ongoing research work\, which will contribute to the well-being of current participants\, as well as future seniors who may benefit from such programmes. \nLearn more about the study here. \nTICKETING INFORMATION • Tickets at $30 via Eventbrite. • All event information is correct at time of print. • Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.
