SUMMARY:Forum: Transcriptions of Chinese Piano Music
DESCRIPTION:The piano is an instrument that has the capability of imitating instrumental sound and orchestral music. During the third quarter of the 20th century\, Chinese composers seek inspiration and freshness in composing piano music that could represent their cultural heritage. They often turned to writing piano transcriptions of the traditional Chinese instrumental music. \nIn this lecture recital by YST faculty member Dr Koo Siaw Sing\, we will discuss selected piano transcriptions originated from the traditional Chinese string instruments such as guqin\, zheng\, pipa\, and erhu. These traditional instruments provide nuances\, expressiveness\, and techniques which are very different from the western string instruments. \nPianists need to understand the unique characteristics and techniques of these instruments in order to interpret the music correctly. We will make a comparison between the piano transcription and the original instrumental music\, investigating on how composers mimicking these instrumental sounds on the piano. Finally\, we will discuss pianistic approaches and technical adjustments needed to best capture the sounds and the spirit of these pieces. \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis. Out of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nBe the first to hear about our upcoming events! Join our mailing list here.
