SUMMARY:Forum Series: The Psychology Of Why Cultures Differ In Music Preference – Emotion And Function
DESCRIPTION:LIEW KONGMENG\, presenter   \nABOUT THE EVENT \nFor many of us\, music is an integral part of everyday life. From representing self-identity to cheering us up on bad days\, the music we listen to must carry a purpose if we keep returning to it in different situations. Yet can we really assume that these purposes are universal across cultures\, or do socio-cultural mechanisms influence us our musical choices?  Through machine learning and other empirical approaches\, Kongmeng has sought to answer these questions. This forum presents part of his research on the cultural specificities that influence the way individuals from different countries experience and listen to music.   \nABOUT LIEW KONGMENG \nLiew Kongmeng is an interdisciplinary researcher and composer. His main research interest focuses on the influence of culture on the experience of emotion in music. He holds a Master of Arts (Research) from Nanyang Technological University\, and a Bachelor of Music (Composition) from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. He is currently a PhD student in Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences at the Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies\, Kyoto University\, and a Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.   \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Free admission. \n• All event information is correct at time of print. \n• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.
