DESCRIPTION:KOO SIAW SING\, presenter \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nEvocative Childhood: Humor in Debussy’s Piano Music \n“Looking back” for an adult often evokes childhood memories that bring certain nostalgic feelings and reflections of life. When Debussy’s artistic expression was at its height in 1905\, he had a daughter\, nicknamed Chou-Chou. As a loving dad\, he exposed his innocence and playful characters to her. As a composer\, he expanded his musical horizon\, boldly inserting humorous characters inside his musical language that he had never done before. Beginning with the Children’s Corner\, a work that he dedicated to his daughter\, and together with some other solo piano music\, Debussy entered the world of imagination of little children. \nIn this lecture-recital\, we will examine the source of inspiration that Debussy had towards his humorous piano music. How did Debussy recapture ingenuousness childlike delight in his musical language? What was the stylistic influence toward his writing of such music?
