SUMMARY:Composition Seminar: Current Trends In Korean Contemporary Music Scene
DESCRIPTION:SEUNG JAE CHUNG\, presenter\nABOUT THE EVENT\nSince 2000\, the contemporary music scene in Korea has changed drastically\, absorbing various musical styles. This presentation explores four trends: avant-garde music with strong experimental spirit (a trend that has continued for several decades); Neo-Romantic music (new in Korea); attempts to combine traditional and western elements (more present than ever before); and the revival of contemporary opera (with many productions in recent years due to government support). \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nSeung Jae Chung received his bachelor’s degree at the Seoul National University\, and his master’s and doctoral degrees at the Manhattan School of Music. He studied conducting with David Gebert; electronic music with Pierre Charvet; and composition with Chung-Gil Kim\, Giampaolo Bracali\, Nils Vegeland\, and Richard Danielpour. \nHis works have been selected for the 1996 Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam\, the Netherlands; Asahi Art Festival 2004 in Tokyo\, Japan; 2004 Asian Composers League Music Festival in Israel; and 2005 ISCM(International Society for Contemporary Music) World Music Days in Zagreb\, Croatia. He has been commissioned by Tongyeong International Music Festival\, TIMF Ensemble\, VECM (Vocal Ensemble for Contemporary Music)\, Korean Piano Duo Association\, Ensemble Eclat\, Ensemble Sori\, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra\, among others. \nMr Chung served as Director of the Electronic Music Studio at the Manhattan School of Music from 1998 to 2000.
